Sizing
How many portable toilets does a plant shutdown crew need?
A plant shutdown crew of 45 men and 15 women needs 4 portable toilets under the Cal/OSHA §3364 table: 3 for the men and 1 for the women. Cal/OSHA counts each sex separately, and 36–55 workers of one sex need 3 toilets. A crew of fewer than 5 needs only 1 all-gender toilet.
| Workers of each sex | Minimum toilets (Cal/OSHA §3364) |
|---|---|
| 1–15 | 1 |
| 16–35 | 2 |
| 36–55 | 3 |
| 56–80 | 4 |
| 81–110 | 5 |
| 111–150 | 6 |
| Over 150 | 1 more per 40 workers or fraction |
- 1
Count the people on site
Add plant staff who lose their restrooms plus every contract worker on the busiest shift.
- 2
Split by men and women
Example: 45 men and 15 women on the turnaround's peak shift.
- 3
Read each row
45 men fall in the 36–55 row: 3 toilets. 15 women fall in the 1–15 row: 1 toilet. Total: 4 units.
- 4
Add handwashing
Put a handwashing station beside each cluster. Food plants should check their own sanitation plan (next section).
Legal minimum: §3364 also says toilets should be within 200 feet of where people work, which can mean 2 small clusters instead of 1 large one. These counts are planning help, not legal advice, so confirm with your safety manager.

Food safety
Do food plants need handwashing next to portable toilets?
Food plants need handwashing near every toilet. FDA rule 21 CFR §117.37 says a food plant must provide clean toilets and handwashing that keeps hands from contaminating food. Our handwashing station has 2 sinks, a foot pump, about 34 gallons of fresh water, soap and paper towels.
| Option | Handwashing | Water | Good fit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Handwashing station | 2 sinks, foot pump, soap, towels | About 34 gal fresh, unheated | Beside a toilet cluster on a yard or dock | Water is not heated |
| Deluxe flushing unit | Sink inside the unit | Self-contained; about 50 flushes | Small office or QA staff | Fresh water runs low on busy shifts |
| Restroom trailer | Vanity sinks, running water | Garden-hose hookup + 110V outlet | Long remodel of a staff restroom | Needs power, water, level spot and truck access |
Check your food-safety plan: §117.37 asks for running water “at a suitable temperature.” Portable station water is not heated. Ask your food-safety lead whether a portable station meets your plan, or whether a restroom trailer on building water is the better fit.

Placement
Where can portable restrooms go on a paved yard with forklift traffic?
Portable restrooms on a paved industrial yard should sit at least 1 full lane away from forklift and truck routes. Each unit needs level pavement within about 15 feet of where our service truck can park. A standard unit is about 44 inches wide and 47 inches deep.
- Pick a corner or curb line, not a dock apron or a forklift turning area
- Keep the doors facing a walkway, not a traffic lane
- Leave room for the service truck to pull in once a week without blocking a dock
- Group units in a cluster with the handwashing station at the end of the row
- Add your own barriers or bollards if units sit near moving equipment
- Mark the spot with cones or paint before delivery day

Pavement is the right surface year-round. It also avoids the winter mud that traps trucks on dirt yards from November to March.

Servicing
How does weekly service work on a long-term plant rental?
Long-term plant rentals are serviced once a week on a 28-day billing cycle that renews until you call for pickup. Each visit pumps the tank, scrubs and sanitizes the inside, adds fresh deodorizer, restocks 2 rolls of toilet paper and refills sanitizer. Service runs Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Delivery on a weekday
Trucks run Monday to Friday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. The driver calls about 30 minutes ahead. Nobody needs to meet the truck if the spot is marked.

Weekly service
We set a regular service day. For a shutdown with heavy use, extra visits can be added as their own line on the quote.
- 4
Gate codes and after-hours access
Give us a gate code or a security-desk contact. A free combination lock keeps units for your crew only.
- 5

Original data from our phone line
What do business and long-term callers ask before they book?
Business and long-term callers focus on service, access and records. In 78 recorded customer calls we reviewed from 2025–2026, 16 calls (21%) discussed the 28-day cycle, 14 calls (18%) raised placement or access, and 12 callers (15%) had to check with an owner, board or spouse before booking.
“Is that with bi-weekly service or weekly service?”
Contractor comparing quotes
“You'd provide a code so my staff know how to get in?”
Caller with a locked site
“It cannot be in the parking lot. It needs to be on this slab specifically.”
Site contact giving placement rules
“They have been just horrible about getting them pumped out.”
Caller describing a previous vendor
Missed service is the complaint that makes business customers switch. That is why every quote names the weekly service day.

Give us the crew count, the dates and the gate details. We confirm units, layout and the service day on the call.
Mon–Sat, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. · Most callers get an itemized quote in under 10 minutes.
What would the monthly cost be for that?
On recent recorded quotes, a long-term unit with weekly service ran about $185–$295 per 28-day cycle, plus a one-time delivery and pickup charge of about $59–$144. A toilet plus handwash station ran about $495 per 28 days. Billing is per 28 days, not per calendar month. Your itemized quote is the final price.
Weekly service is pretty common, right?
Yes. Weekly service is included on every long-term unit. Sites with light or sporadic use can ask for every-other-week service. Busy shutdowns can add extra visits.
Can you service the units after our shift ends?
Service runs Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. If your yard is gated, leave a gate code or a security contact, and the driver services the units without anyone meeting the truck.
Could you provide a lock on the portables?
Yes. A combination lock is free on request. You choose who gets the code. Your company is responsible for damage or vandalism at an unattended site.
How many units do we need for a 60-person shutdown?
Split the crew by sex and use the Cal/OSHA §3364 table. For 45 men and 15 women, that is 3 units plus 1 unit, so 4 total. Add a handwashing station beside each cluster.
Do you need a purchase order or can we pay by card?
We take credit or debit card at booking, and we can send a pay-by-link. Tax-exempt organizations send a certificate. Every quote is itemized with a quote number for your records.
