Events
How many porta potties do I need for my event?
Plan 1 porta potty for every 50 guests for an event of up to 4 hours, so a 150-guest, 4-hour party needs 3 units. Add 20% more, at least 1 unit, when alcohol is served, which makes 4. Events longer than 4 hours scale up in proportion: 8 hours doubles the count.

| 50 guests | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 guests | 2 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 3 |

| 500 guests | 10 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 12 |
Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 6 hours, with a bar
- 1
Base count
150 guests ÷ 50 = 3 units for 4 hours.
- 2
Adjust for length
6 hours ÷ 4 = 1.5 × 3 = 4.5 → round up to 5 units.
- 3
Adjust for alcohol
20% of 5 = 1 more unit → 6 units.
- 4
Accessible and handwash
Make 1 of the 6 wheelchair-accessible. Food served: add 2 handwashing stations (1 per 4 toilets, rounded up).
Assumptions: guests arrive over the first hour, roughly half are men, and a urinal is in each standard unit. The 1-per-50 base is our dispatch planning guideline. The alcohol adjustment is a planning rule of thumb, not a regulation.
Construction
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A California construction site needs 1 toilet for every 20 workers, or fraction of 20, under Cal/OSHA 8 CCR §1526, so a crew of 21 needs 2. Crews under 5 workers may share 1 all-gender job site toilet. Each unit should be serviced at least weekly.
| Workers on site | Cal/OSHA minimum (all-gender single-user units) | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–19 | 1 | 1 unit, weekly service |
| 20 | 1 | 2 units if the crew works 10-hour days |
| 21–40 | 2 | 2 units + 1 handwash station |
| 41–60 | 3 | 3 units + 1 handwash station |
| 61–100 | 4–5 | 5 units, 2 stations, service twice weekly |
Legal minimum vs. federal table: Federal OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 is looser (1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers above 20). California jobsites follow the stricter Cal/OSHA count.

Agriculture
How many field toilets does a farm crew need?
A California farm crew needs separate toilets for each sex for every 20 workers, plus 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers, under 8 CCR §3457. Each must sit within a ¼-mile walk or 5 minutes of the crew, whichever is shorter. A 30-person mixed crew therefore needs at least 2 toilets and 2 handwash stations.
| Crew size | Toilets (each sex) | Handwash stations | Distance limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5 | 1 single-user, all-gender | 1 | ¼ mile or 5 min |
| 5–20 | 1 per sex present | 1 | ¼ mile or 5 min |
| 21–40 | Up to 2 per sex, by headcount | 2 | ¼ mile or 5 min |
| 41–60 | Up to 3 per sex, by headcount | 3 | ¼ mile or 5 min |
Accessibility
How many wheelchair-accessible units do I need?
At least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster must be wheelchair-accessible under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2, and never fewer than 1. A cluster of 6 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 25 needs 2. Each accessible unit needs a level, firm route and a 60-inch turning space inside.
| Units in a cluster | Accessible units (minimum) |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 |
| 61–80 | 4 |
This is a planning summary, not legal advice. Your venue or permit office has the final say on how many accessible units an event needs.

Handwashing
How many handwashing stations should I add?
Add 1 handwashing station for every 4 toilets at any event that serves food, rounded up, and never fewer than 1. Farm crews need 1 station per 20 workers under Cal/OSHA §3457. Each 2-sink station holds about 34 gallons of fresh water.

How many people does one porta potty accommodate?
One standard porta potty serves about 50 guests over a 4-hour event, under our dispatch guideline. Longer events need more units or a mid-event service, which is an extra line on the quote.
We have about 100 people at church for one day. Is one unit enough?
One unit is tight for 100 people. Plan 2 units for a 100-person, 4-hour event, and make 1 of them wheelchair-accessible if the public attends.
How many restroom trailer stalls do 75 to 80 guests need?
For 75–80 guests over 4–5 hours, 2 stalls is the planning minimum. Add a third stall or a standard unit if there is a bar or the event runs past 5 hours.
Do I need more units if alcohol is served?
Yes. Add about 20% more units, and at least 1 more, when alcohol is served. A 3-unit party becomes a 4-unit party.
How far can the toilets be from my field crew?
Within a ¼-mile walk or 5 minutes, whichever is shorter, under Cal/OSHA 8 CCR §3457. Towable units make it easier to move toilets as the crew moves.
