Will a standard porta potty fit through my gate?
A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide and 47 inches deep, so a normal single gate usually works. Measure the clear opening between the gate posts, and allow a few extra inches for the crew's hands. The spot must also sit within about 15 feet of where the truck parks.
- Measure the gate's clear opening, post to post. Tell us the number on the call.
- Look up. The unit is about 91 inches tall, and the crew tips it on a dolly. Call out low wires, eaves and branches.
- Walk the path. Steps, a narrow side yard or loose gravel change how the crew moves the unit.
- Pick a fairly level spot. A mild slope is fine; a steep driveway apron is not.
- Leave the gate unlocked or put the gate code in the order notes. Nobody needs to be home.
- Mark the spot with a cone, chalk or ribbon. The driver calls about 30 minutes ahead.

“Does the gate have to be a large gate to enter the backyard, or can it be a normal single gate?”
Backyard party host
“A lot of front yards here have a slope by the driveway. Are you able to place it there?”

Two ways to rent
Is a standard porta potty right for a jobsite or for a party?
A standard porta potty works for both jobs, but the rental setup differs. A jobsite unit stays on a 28-day cycle with weekly service. An event unit stays 1–4 days, arrives cleaned and stocked, and gets no mid-event cleaning unless you add one.
| Jobsite or remodel | Party or event | |
|---|---|---|
| Rental length | 28-day billing cycle, renews until you call for pickup | 1–4 days (dropped the business day before, picked up the business day after) |
| Cleaning | Weekly: tank pumped, scrubbed, sanitized, 2 rolls of toilet paper, sanitizer refilled | Arrives cleaned and stocked; no mid-event service unless you add it |
| How many | 1 per 20 workers under 8 CCR §1526; crews under 5 can share 1 | About 1 per 50 guests for a 4-hour event (our dispatch guideline) |
| Lock | Free combination lock for overnight security | Free combination lock until the party starts |
| Pickup | Call 2 business days before day 28 to stop the next cycle | Automatic — no call needed |
| Usual spot | Edge of the lot, near the truck route, on gravel or pavement | Side yard, driveway or lawn edge, away from the food |
Jobsite rule: Cal/OSHA 8 CCR §1526 requires at least 1 toilet for every 20 employees on a construction site, and a crew of fewer than 5 may share 1 all-gender toilet. Federal OSHA Table D-1 in 29 CFR 1926.51 sets the same 1-per-20 floor. Beyond that legal minimum, we often suggest a second unit when crews overlap at lunch.
Compare
How does a standard porta potty compare with the other units?
A standard porta potty is the smallest, simplest unit we rent: about 44 inches wide, with no hookups and no water to run out. Every other unit adds a flush, a sink, wheelchair space or real restrooms. Each addition brings a space, water or power trade-off.
| Unit | Best for | Flush | Handwashing | Wheelchair access | Hookups | Footprint | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | Jobsites, backyard parties, church events | No | Sanitizer only | No | None | About 44 × 47 in | No sink, no flush |
| Deluxe flushing unit | Guests who want to rinse hands | Foot pump | Sink inside | No | None | Same as standard | Water runs out after about 50 flushes |
| Standard + handwash station | Food served, farm crews, jobsites | No | 2-sink station outside | No | None | Adds about 3 × 3 ft | Two pieces to place |
| Wheelchair-accessible unit | Public events, any guest in a wheelchair | No | Sanitizer; add a station | Yes | Level pad | About 7.5 × 7.5 ft | Will not fit a single gate |
| Restroom trailer | Weddings, 75+ guests | Real toilets | Vanity sinks | No (steps) | 110V outlet + hose | Truck access needed | Needs power, water and room |

Honest limits
When is a standard porta potty the wrong unit for the job?
A standard porta potty is the wrong unit in 5 cases: a guest uses a wheelchair, food is served, the host expects a flush and a sink, a farm crew needs handwashing, or the crew moves every day. Each case below has a better unit or setup.
- A guest uses a wheelchair. A standard door and floor are too tight. Swap 1 unit for a wheelchair-accessible unit.
- Food is served. Sanitizer does not clean greasy or dirty hands. Add a 2-sink handwash station next to the units.
- A formal wedding or dinner. Guests in nice clothes expect a sink, a mirror and a flush. Look at VIP cabins or a restroom trailer.
- A farm crew in the field. Toilets for each sex plus 1 handwash facility per 20 workers apply. Plan a handwash station per 20 workers.
- A moving crew. Units on a towable trailer follow the crew down the rows or the road.

Original data from our phone line
What do callers ask before they book a standard unit?
In 78 recorded customer calls we reviewed from 2025–2026, 45% of callers asked the price first and 18% needed a unit for only a few hours or one day. Another 18% asked about placement or access, and 12% asked about handwashing. Most callers wanted the basic standard unit.
“Does the standard one have hand sanitizer, or does it have like a washing station?”
Church event organizer
“How many people does the standard unit accommodate, approximately?”
Event caller
“I don't need anything fancy, just for boys.”
Party host
“Just basically going as cheap as I can get.”
Weekend party host
The short version: a standard unit has sanitizer, not a sink. One unit covers about 50 guests for 4 hours; the porta potty calculator does the math for bigger groups. A one-day party still books the full drop-to-pickup window, because our trucks deliver the business day before.
Local placement
Where should a standard porta potty go in Salinas?
A standard porta potty in Salinas belongs on level ground within about 15 feet of the truck, with the door facing away from the afternoon valley wind. From November to March, choose pavement or gravel over clay soil. A unit on a city street or sidewalk needs a City of Salinas encroachment permit.
Face the door downwind
Wind pushes up the Salinas Valley most afternoons. A door facing into it slams and blows open. We turn doors away and stake units on open lots.
Skip the winter lawn
Wet clay can trap the service truck from November to March. A driveway edge or gravel pad keeps weekly service on schedule.
Street placement needs a permit
A driveway or private lot needs no permit. A unit in the street or on the sidewalk needs an encroachment permit from Salinas Public Works.
Lock it on public lots
Ask for the free combination lock. The renter covers vandalism or damage at an unattended site.

How much do you guys charge for your standard porta-potty?
On recent recorded quotes, a standard event unit for a weekend (Friday drop, Monday pickup) most often came to about $249 including delivery and pickup. Quotes ran roughly $199–$299 before tax, depending on the date and distance. A jobsite unit ran about $185–$295 per 28-day cycle with weekly service, plus a one-time delivery and pickup charge. Your itemized quote is the final price.
Does the standard one have hand sanitizer, or does it have like a washing station?
The standard unit has a hand sanitizer dispenser inside. It has no sink and no water. For soap and water, add a 2-sink handwashing station or choose a deluxe flushing unit with a sink inside.
How many people does the standard unit accommodate, approximately?
Our dispatch guideline is about 1 standard unit per 50 guests for an event of up to 4 hours. Add 1 unit when alcohol is served. On a jobsite, Cal/OSHA 8 CCR §1526 sets at least 1 toilet per 20 workers.
Can I rent a porta-potty for one day?
Yes, but the price covers the whole drop-to-pickup window, not one day. Our trucks run Monday through Friday, so we drop the unit the business day before your event and pick it up the business day after. A Saturday party is dropped Friday and picked up Monday at no extra charge.
Is there any extra charge for having the lock on there?
No. A combination lock is free on request. You choose who gets the code. The renter is responsible for vandalism or damage at an unattended site, so a lock is a good idea on any public lot.
A lot of front yards here have a slope by the driveway. Are you able to place it there?
A mild slope is fine. A steep driveway apron is not, because the unit can rock and the door will not close right. Pick the flattest spot within about 15 feet of where the truck can park, and mark it with a cone or chalk.
