Original research from our rental line

What did 78 porta potty rental calls teach us?

In 78 recorded porta potty rental calls we reviewed from 2025–2026, 45% of callers asked for a price first and 49% were planning a weekend event. Another 26% needed delivery the same day or the next day, and 19% asked if the company was local. Those 4 numbers shape how every rental call should go.

45%opened by asking for a price35 of 78 calls
49%had a weekend event (drop Friday, pick up Monday)38 of 78 calls
26%needed same-day or next-day delivery20 of 78 calls
19%asked “are you local?”15 of 78 calls

We listened to every call, tagged what each caller wanted, and counted the questions. The patterns were stronger than we expected. Most callers asked the same five things, in nearly the same words.

This post shares the full breakdown. The calls are anonymized. No names, phone numbers or addresses appear anywhere.

Call types

Why do people call about a porta potty rental?

Events drove 60% of the 78 calls: 47 callers had a party, church event, wedding or community event. Construction and home remodels made up 17%, with 13 calls. Emergencies and pump-out requests were 5 calls each, and 1 call came from a ranch.

  • Events: parties, church, weddings, community (47 of 78)
  • Construction and home remodels (13 of 78)
  • Other: wrong product, out of area, billing (7 of 78)
  • Emergencies: septic, sewer, water shut-off (5 of 78)
  • Pump-out or service-only (5 of 78)
  • Farm or ranch (1 of 78)

Primary reason for the call. Each call counted once. Total = 78.

Emergencies56%A unit today or first thing tomorrow, for weeks, not days
Pump-out / service-only56%Draining existing units, an RV black-water tank, or a pickup
Farm / ranch11%A 30-day unit for a ranch

Weddings were a smaller slice than most people guess. Only 6 of the 47 event calls were weddings or rehearsal dinners. Birthdays, church events, fish fries and house parties made up most of the rest.

The emergency calls were the most urgent on the line. They included a collapsed home septic tank, a grocery store sewer line and a children’s center with its water shut off.

Question frequency

Which porta potty questions come up most often?

Weekend timing came up in 38 of 78 calls (49%), and price as the opening question came up in 35 calls (45%). Same-day or next-day delivery came up in 20 calls, and the 28-day billing cycle in 16. One call can carry several topics, so the shares add up to more than 100%.

  • Planning a weekend event (38 of 78)
  • Asked the price first (35 of 78)
  • Needed same-day or next-day (20 of 78)
  • Discussed the 28-day cycle (16 of 78)
  • Asked “are you local?” (15 of 78)
  • Wanted it for hours or one day (14 of 78)
  • Asked about placement or access (14 of 78)
  • Had to check with spouse, board or owner (12 of 78)
  • Pushed back on price (11 of 78)
  • Asked about handwashing (9 of 78)
  • Asked for wheelchair access (8 of 78)
  • Asked how often it gets cleaned (6 of 78)

Share of all 78 calls in which the topic came up. Topics overlap.

Two numbers surprised us. First, 18% of callers only needed a unit for a few hours or one day, and often assumed a one-day price existed.

Second, 15% could not book on the spot because a spouse, church board or property owner had to approve it.

Cleaning came up least, in 6 calls. Callers mostly assumed it was handled. The ones who asked were long-term renters who wanted to know if weekly service was included.

Top 25 questions

What are the top 25 porta potty rental questions, word for word?

The top 25 porta potty rental questions below are taken from the 78 calls with names and places removed. Five are about price, six are about timing, and the rest cover units, placement, cleaning and billing. Each question is lightly trimmed but keeps the caller’s own wording.

  1. “Is it per day or for the whole time?”Price
  2. “How much do you guys charge for your standard porta potty?”Price
  3. “How much would it be to rent a porta potty for one day?”Price
  4. “So what would the total be?”Price
  5. “Is the lock any extra charge?”Price
  6. “Can I rent a porta potty for tomorrow?”Timing
  7. “Is there any way to get a couple of porta potties to an event today?”Timing
  8. “So you drop it off on Friday and pick it up when?”Timing
  9. “Do I need to be there for the delivery?”Timing
  10. “What would be the latest that it would be delivered?”Timing
  11. “By when would I need to reserve it? A week before? Two weeks?”Timing
  12. “Are you located in town? Are you a local entity?”Local
  13. “So you guys are just a dispatch for the companies?”Local
  14. “Does the standard one have hand sanitizer, or does it have a washing station?”Unit
  15. “Do you have ones with the sink?”Unit
  16. “I’d only need one of them to be handicap accessible. Do you have that?”Unit
  17. “Is the ADA one bigger?”Unit
  18. “Does it come with a lock? Because it will be out in public.”Security
  19. “Are you able to put it in a backyard?”Placement
  20. “Does the gate have to be a large gate, or can it be a normal single gate?”Placement
  21. “How often do you come to service it?”Cleaning
  22. “Even if I take it for three days, you’re charging me for the full month?”Billing
  23. “Do I have to call for a pickup, or will they just come back and get it?”Billing
  24. “If we need to cancel or add the sink, how does that policy work?”Billing
  25. “Do you take cash?”Payment

Most of these have short answers:

  • A weekend event unit is priced for the whole rental, not each day.
  • Nobody needs to be home at delivery.
  • A standard unit fits a normal single gate.
  • The lock is free on request.
  • Payment is by card, not cash.

The full answers live on the right pages: the porta potty rental cost guide covers price lines, and the long-term rental page covers the 28-day cycle and pickup calls.

Objections

What objections did callers raise, and how can a renter avoid each one?

Callers raised 6 objections again and again across the 78 calls. The biggest was price: 11 callers, or 14%, pushed back on a quote. The others were weekend timing, paying a full rental for a few hours, surprise fees, an unwanted second billing cycle, and not knowing who would deliver.

“That’s more than I thought.”11 calls (14%)Caller compared a full-weekend price to a memory of a cheaper one-day priceAsk for the total with delivery, pickup and tax on one line. Compare totals, not base prices.
“Can’t you bring it Saturday?”38 weekend calls (49%)Drivers do not run on weekends, so the unit comes Friday and leaves MondayPlan for a Friday drop. Mark the spot and leave a gate code so nobody has to wait at home.
“I only need it for three hours.”14 calls (18%)There is no hourly rate; the event rental covers drop-off through pickupBook the event rental for the whole weekend and use it as long as you like.
“Why is the invoice higher than the quote?”Several callsFuel, card or convenience fees showed up after the verbal priceAsk for an itemized quote and a quote number before you pay.
“Why was I billed a second time?”16 calls discussed 28-day cyclesA pickup call came too late, or was not loggedCall at least 2 business days before day 28 and write down the date you called.
“Who is actually delivering this?”15 calls (19%)Some callers had reached a dispatch line that could not name the haulerAsk where the yard is and whose truck will come. A local operator can answer both.

Pattern we saw: The fastest calls were the ones where the caller already knew the ZIP code, the date, the guest or crew count, and where the unit would sit. Those four facts let a dispatcher quote in one pass.

Price pushback almost never came from the unit price alone. It came from fees that appeared late, or from comparing a full weekend to a one-day price that does not exist. An itemized quote with clear rental terms removes both problems.

Caller quotes

What did porta potty callers say in their own words?

The 78 calls had clear themes in plain words: urgency, trust and budget. Eight short quotes below show those themes better than any summary. Every quote is anonymized, and each line comes with only the caller’s role or situation, not a name or a town.

“Is it per day or for the whole time?”

Church event organizer

“I just found out my septic tank has collapsed. I'm going to need a porta potty as soon as possible.”

Homeowner

“Our supplier did not deliver. Is there something you can do today?”

Roofing contractor

“We have a bathroom, but I just don't want a lot of people coming into my house.”

Backyard party host

“Is there a way to get a price list so I don't have to go through all the phone trees?”

Event caller

“We for sure have one person that will be in a wheelchair, which is why we're looking at this.”

Public event planner

“I want to get a rough cost so I can get it approved by the church.”

Church volunteer

“It's a neighborhood fish fry I do every year. It seems bigger and bigger every year.”

Repeat event host

Notice how many quotes are about process, not product. People wanted to know who they were talking to, what the total was, and when the truck would come.

What changed

What did we change because of these 78 calls?

We made 6 changes to how we quote and book a porta potty rental because of the 78 calls. Every quote is now itemized with a quote number, and weekend timing is explained in the first minute. We also text a reminder before each 28-day renewal.

  • Every quote lists unit, delivery and pickup, servicing, any rush fee and tax on separate lines
  • A quote number on every call, so a spouse or board can call back without starting over
  • Weekend events explained up front: dropped Friday, picked up Monday, no extra charge
  • A text reminder before every 28-day cycle renews
  • A free combination lock offered on every public-site rental
  • Our yard address (520 Brunken Ave, Salinas, CA 93901) and hours on every page

The quote number change came straight from the 15% of callers who had to check with someone else. Those callers often called back days later. A quote number lets them pick up where they left off.

Before you call

What should you have ready before you call for a porta potty?

Have 5 details ready before you call: the delivery ZIP code, the drop-off and pickup dates, the guest or crew count, where the unit will sit, and any gate code. With those 5 details, most porta potty quotes take under 10 minutes on the phone.

  1. 1

    ZIP code and address

The ZIP sets the delivery line. Rural sites without an address can send a map pin.

  2. 2

    Dates

For a weekend event, plan on a Friday drop and a Monday pickup. For a job, give a start date and a rough end date.

  3. 3

    Head count

Guests and hours for events; crew size for jobs. The porta potty calculator turns those into a unit count.

  4. 4

    The spot

Level ground, within about 15 feet of where a truck can park. Note gates, slopes and low wires.

  5. 5

    Who approves it

If a spouse, board or owner must sign off, ask for the quote number and an emailed copy.

Method note

How were the 78 porta potty calls counted and categorized?

The sample is 78 recorded customer calls from 2025–2026, each with a live conversation about a rental, a service or a bill. Each call got 1 primary category based on why the caller phoned. Topics like price, timing and placement were then tagged separately, so one call can carry several tags.

Limitations

  • The calls were machine-transcribed. A few words were unclear, and we left those quotes out.
  • The calls came from many towns. They do not describe any single city, so we never quote them as “calls from” one place.
  • Two callers phoned twice about the same event. Each call is counted, because each one asked new questions.
  • 78 calls is a small sample. Treat the shares as patterns, not precise rates.
  • Seasons matter. Spring and late-summer event calls may be over-represented.

We plan to recount with new calls at our next review. Prices quoted on these calls appear only in the FAQ below, as recent quotes, because the final price is always your itemized quote.

Call with your ZIP, dates and head count. We give you an itemized total and a quote number.

Mon–Sat, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. · Most callers get an itemized quote in under 10 minutes.

Is it per day or for the whole time?

A porta potty event rental is priced for the whole rental, not per day. On recent quotes, a standard weekend unit most often came to about $249 including delivery and pickup, with quotes running about $199–$299 before tax depending on date and distance. Your itemized quote is the final price.

Were all 78 calls from Salinas?

No. The 78 calls came from many towns and were reviewed together as one sample from 2025–2026. That is why we describe them as calls on our rental line, never as calls from one city.

Why did some callers say the price was more than they expected?

Most expected a one-day price or had an old quote in mind. Others saw fees appear after the verbal price. On recent quotes, a next-day rush fee ran about $125, and a same-day emergency fee could top $200. Ask for every line on the quote before you pay.

Can I hear the recordings or see the transcripts?

No. The recordings contain private details such as names, phone numbers and addresses. We publish only counts and short anonymized quotes.

What was the most avoidable problem on the calls?

Waiting too long. Callers who phoned on Thursday for a holiday weekend often found every truck booked. Book at least 2 business days ahead, and earlier for holiday weekends and July.

Will you update these numbers?

Yes. We plan to recount at each six-month review and note the new sample size and period at the top of the method section.
